Desert Journey: An Operatic Fable

Walnut Hill School for the arts

Don't miss the world premiere of this charming new opera, commissioned for the high school classical voice majors at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, with story, libretto and music by Composer Charles Turner. “Desert Journey: An Operatic Fable” is a modern fairy tale set in a sort of mythical desert, with elements reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz and The Little Prince. The story is of a young traveler who embarks on a solo journey through the desert to revisit an oasis, to honor a beloved uncle who passed away. He had taught her about the world and its wonders through travel, music and books. On her journey she meets and befriends a hungry, irritable Cobra, a Sphinx whose with an unsolvable riddle; a young Djinn who can only grant one wish, and a Dust Dervish (wind storm) that has been granted a wish for eternal life, but who now must stay in constant motion and is always exhausted. As these unlikely characters find and help one another, they realize that their journey is always better together, and that if you keep going, somewhere, there is an oasis.
